Are you interested in learning about initiatives to increase native wildlife habitat by managing invasive plants in the District?

On June 7th, 2012 at 12:00 pm at the offices of the DC Environmental Network and Global Green USA (1100 15th Street NW, Washington, DC, 11th Floor), members of the Steering Committee for the District of Columbia Cooperative Weed Management Area (DC-CWMA) will hold a public meeting to formally announce the establishment of the DC-CWMA, and to invite any organizations who view invasive plants as a threat to natural areas in the District to join the DC-CWMA.

RSVP for this event here!

Background:

The DC-CWMA’s coordinator and Steering Committee will brief participants on the benefits of joining the CWMA, the benefits of cooperative management of invasive plants, the structure and function of a CWMA, and the DC-CWMA’s plan for managing invasive plant management in the District.  The cooperative welcomes partnership with District landowners and managers, environmental organizations, community groups and individuals interested in becoming active in invasive plant management efforts in the District.

The mission of the District of Columbia Cooperative Weed Management Area is “To restore natural habitats and ecosystems and to protect biodiversity by working to eliminate invasive plants in the District through a coordinated effort across political and ecological boundaries.”  One of our primary goals is to educate and engage communities through various training and volunteer opportunities. For organizations with work-force development programs, the cooperative can provide valuable Green Jobs trainings on invasive plant management.

Other opportunities for partner involvement include:

•    Participation in Weed Warrior training
•    Ability to apply for multi-state, multi-partner or watershed-based grants
•    Volunteer work-days for your group
•    DC-CWMA committee membership

The DC-CWMA is composed of partners from local and federal agencies, and local conservation organizations.  Our current partners include the National Park Service, The U.S. National Arboretum, the District Departments of the Environment and Transportation, the Student Conservation Association, the Anacostia Watershed Society, and the University of the District of Columbia’s Cooperative Extension Service.
